Let’s Change Gears | Steve Wait – Sometime in 2004

This post in regard to the wheel Involution, not any particular motorcycle it was used on as those are creations of others.

Many years ago I conceived, designed and manufactured several unique wheels for motorcycles. Collectively, those using a planetary gear arrangement I dubbed the Involution series. Since I have never ridden a motorcycle, my motivation was never the “bike” but rather the mechanical design and artistry needed to produce focal intrigue. “Functional Kinetic Art”, as titled in a Robb Report piece, was a very much appreciated, and appropriate, description of the result. The wheels were fully functional, in some I even implemented carrier arm precession for each side in opposing directions. Structural integrity of the wheel was maintained and is often overlooked as it seemingly resides in the background. And no, introduction of a foreign object into the system would not be catastrophic as the carriers would simply begin to rotate with the wheel itself. Although never intended for use at highway speeds, they were indeed quite mesmerizing at a more moderate show bike rate. Provided are pictures of some, magazine articles and a video link highlighting production. Of particular note are the ones used by Three Spires Customs in Pewsey, UK and showcased on “War Eagle” by Mr. Garry Willard. While I have not had the pleasure knowing Mr. Willard, I worked extensively with Mr. Phil Rowntree to achieve the look he desired. I hope they were all pleased with the outcome, I certainly was.
